Guest Artists
Four actors from four of Broadway’s hottest shows were guest artists in the three-week Summer Stock program at NCTC in 2009.
Each afternoon for four days, each guest discussed their experiences, knowledge and inside perspectives on the Broadway industry—from how they got started to what it’s like performing on The Great White Way. They then performed live for the group. Following the discussion and performance, each actor taught the students original choreography and music from a Broadway production number.
Among the visiting artists were Joel Karie, Simba of Disney’s The Lion King, who spoke of his experience performing in London and Germany before coming to New York. NCTC students also met Tony Mansker, an original cast member from Disney’s Mary Poppins. Kathy Deitch, an original performer from Wicked on Broadway, spoke about her experiences on tour and later opening on Broadway. Finally, the NCTC students met Cathryn Basile, who plays one of Ariel’s sisters in Disney’s The Little Mermaid.
In the week following their classes with the Broadway performers, the Summer Stock students took the four Broadway numbers that they had learned and incorporated them into an original show created and written—with the help of the NCTC staff—to be performed for invited family and friends.
